National Junior League Sunday 24th May Withdean Stadium Brighton
The under 20 team improved on their team performance in the second match of the series finishing in 6th place only 3 points behind Chichester and ahead of Bournemouth AC. and Guildford and Godalming.
Super performances were produced by debutante Emma Bucket producing an English School qualifying jump in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.33m. three centimetres over the qualifying distance. She also produced a good jump in the High Jump to take maximum points in that event too, with a leap of 1m.60. K ate Lysons helped the team by also winning the B high jump with a clearance of 1.50m. Sophie Smith was our only other A string winner in this strong league, winning the 3000m ,a particularly notable win in the heat of the day. Younger sister Katie performed well in the 800m. Emma Buckett also Putt the Shot a distance of 9m 10 supported again by the consistent Kate Lysons winning the B string event with a Putt of 7.58. Kate also ran the 100m Hurdles finishing in second place with a time of 16.6 behind winner Francesca Bennett of Brighton who skimmed over them in a winning time of 15.1 to be athlete of the match. Frankie Hanson from Andover was 2nd in the B race with a time of 18.9. Kate rounded off a busy individual day with a run in the 100m in 13..4for a 3rd place and ran a solid leg in the 4x400m relay. Andover’s young Grace Patterson won the B 200m in a time of 27.3 whilst Holly Rawson was 6th in the A race. Kirsty Piper despite injury was able to put in solid performance in the Discus, Javelin and Hammer .Donna Mullholland in her first outing of the year gained 2nd place in the B string Discus. Frankie Hanson put in a good jump in the Triple .The girls then safely got the baton round in 3rd places for both the 4x100relay(Hanson,,Patterson,Rawson,Buckett)and 4x400m relay(Smith Smith,Lysons,Rawson)
The boys were depleted to due to a fixture clash with the Alder Valley League. This did not deter the performances of those who were there. Tom Sycklemoore and Dan Short both ran pbs in the 8oom. Tom reducing his time down to 2.02.9 in a hard run race for third place. Jon Wallace ran a creditable run in the 100m then stormed to a pb in the 200m with a time of 23.1Jake Rose followed with a pb in the 110mh of 17.8 Joe Flitcroft by his own standards had a quiet day, narrowly only 1 cm off the second spot in the Hammer with a throw of 29m11. He ran a steady race in the 400m H later plus running in both relays.
Robert Piper despite being one of the youngest at the meeting was not overawed in his events the long jump, Javelin and triple jump. . Liam McGarrigle returning from injury took it steady in the 400m and set a pb in the 200m. The boys then ran the 4x100m relay (Wallace, Flitcroft Piper McGarrigle ) and the 4x400m( Sycklemoore ,Short McGarrigle and Flitcroft.) In the later they were disqualified due to the fact that although the feet of an outgoing runner were in the take over area the hand was over the line when the baton was exchanged
