The Todays Runner League Team picking up 3rd place in the National Cross Country Final A group of 22 runners from Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletic Club (BMHAC) boarded a coach from Down Grange early on Sunday 27 March, to travel the 2.5 hours to Burton On Trent in Derbyshire. Travelling together by coach, organised by team captain Tim Fowler and results coordinator Bill Wyeth, some were apprehensive at representing Hampshire in a national event, but all enjoyed the day, and the result of their efforts was an impressive 3rd place team finish. BMHAC had qualified for this national final by beating 16 other clubs in the Hampshire "Today's Runner" division, during a series of six races between October 2010 and February 2011. The national final was a challenging single lap race of 5.1 miles, along Derbyshire footpaths and tracks, with many steep hills and rapid descents, and views over the Trent valley adding to the appeal. Steve Jeffery led the thirteen Basingstoke men with an excellent eighth place overall, followed by Dan Woolnough 13th. Chris Furness (23rd) kept ahead of Chris Burghes (26th) with Dan Short (28th) keeping Mark Slaney (31st) at bay. Russell Burton (33rd) made an essential contribution to the team as the seventh counter. Becky Crisp (3rd), Katie Carter (5th) and Sophie Smith (8th) were the top three lady finishers for the club, making the most impressive contribution to the team result. The national event winner was the Derbyshire club, Hatton Darts, with 133 points. Second place was Stainland Lions from Halifax, representing West Yorkshire, with 146 points. Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC, representing Hampshire, finished an impressive 3rd place overall, with 178 points. The other BMHAC finishers at the final were Marie Evans (9th), Marie Alexander-High (18th), Debbie Gregory (20th), and Vivianne Walters (28th), for the ladies. And for the men, Don Powell (37th), Tim Fowler (40th), Mark Bevan (54th), Ray Gartland (55th), Robin Bruce (61st), and Ian Smith (62nd). In a year when the Basingstoke club starts its track refurbishment at Down Grange, and its membership increases to record numbers, this was an impressive result that gives national recognition to their cross country runners. BMHAC win the Hampshire 'Todays Runner' Cross County League - 2010/2011
The Todays Runner XC League has 17 Hampshire clubs competing, with usually around 250 runners in each event. Each race is a single lap of around 5 miles across a multi-terrain course, with men and ladies running together, and catering for all abilities and levels of fitness. To encourage a competitive race, the elite fast club runners are excluded from racing in the Todays Runner XC League if they have raced an equivalent distance at 5:30 minute mile pace (or better) for men and 6:00 minute mile pace (or better) for women. The overall team result is measured using the top 5 men runners and top 3 women runners results, and therefore it is a great event to get all members of the running club to compete, in a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Some notable facts: During the 2010/2011 season, a total of 70 different BMHAC runners represented the club across all six races. Top prize for competing in all six events goes to Don Powell and Tim Pearce. Most others achieved 2-4 races each. A special mention is deserved for those that raced in five events: Chris Burghes, Chris Furness, Becky Crisp, Marie Alexander-High, and Vivianne Walters. Although the men were fantastic, it was often the amazing women's results that claimed the team's overall first prize. Notable competitors this season that earned Top 3 scoring places were Tracey Cornell, Becky Crisp, Katie Carter, Emma Hope, Marie Alexander-High, Marie Evans, Sarah Gaskell, and Sophie Smith. The men's Top 6 scorers in the series included Chris Burghes, Chris Furness, Dave Meacock, Don Powell, Dan Short, Dan Woolnough, John Bigg, Mark Simcox, Russell Burton, Sam Bevan, Steve Jeffery, and Toby Smith. Only one BMHAC runner achieved a first place in any of the six races - Toby Smith, at Pamber Forest near Tadley, in the first race of the season in October 2010. BMHAC hosted the first (of the six) races - at Pamber Forest near Tadley on 31 October 2010. The other hosting clubs in the series were Denmead, Stubbington, Portsmouth Joggers, Farnham, and Hart RR. The final individual Basingstoke results can be found in the spreadsheet here. The final results showing Basingstoke winning the series can be found here.

The BHAC Road Runners calendar has been added to the bottom of this page. Scroll down to see. After 4 events with 2 to go, Basingstoke lead the Todays Runner Winter League. Here is a message from our club coordinator, Tim Fowler: I have been checking the results from the 4 Todays Runner League (TRL) events this season, i.e. since October, and I have created a spreadsheet that summarises our individual placings. In addition, for the top runners that have scored for BMHAC in each event (i.e. first 5 men and first 3 ladies) I have shown them highlighted. An interesting statistic from the table is that we have had 67 different runners competing for BMHAC across these four events, a fantastic achievement, well done to you all, I hope that you are enjoying the events and the TRL series. I'm trying to contain my excitement, but as you probably know we are currently in FIRST place in the Todays Runner Cross Country league, after four events with two events to go - at Manor Farm (near Stubbington) on Sunday 13 Feb, and then Staunton Country Park (near Havant) on Sunday 6 March). If you want to see the full listing for all clubs, here are the current standings with BMHAC in top place. Do let me know if you spot any errors in the spreadsheet - I will try to keep it updated as we head towards the end of the xc season. Tim
He merely has to run 100km - and while doing that - he must try to beat as many English, Irish and Welsh runners as possible. Dan recently came 2nd in the Gloucester 50k as can be seen here
